Mastering Number

Mastering Number Programme _ EYFS, KS1 and KS2.

Oakhill Primary School is taking part in the National for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) project to support the teaching of basic maths skills in our school. This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.

In Reception, children have a 10 minute Mastering Number session, 4 times a week with an adult, as well as having access to various continuous provision maths activities throughout the week. In KS1, children have a 10-15 Mastering Number session in addition to their Power Maths lesson. Over the year, the children will experience using a range of resources and representations, including a small abacus-like piece of equipment called a rekenrek.

Starting this academic year 2025/2026, we are proud to be part of the Mastering Number KS2 programme, developed by the NCETM and Maths Hubs. This initiative builds on the strong foundations laid in EYFS and KS1, helping children in Years 4 and 5 to develop fluency, flexibility, and confidence with number facts.

Through short, focused sessions, pupils deepen their understanding of place valueaddition and subtraction strategies, and multiplicative relationships. The programme supports all learners, including those who need to strengthen their number sense, and complements our wider maths curriculum.
